For this project, the company wanted to showcase a new feature of their app: tapping into office buildings using the built-in wallet feature on the phone. I was tasked with creating a video showcasing this feature and worked with the creative director to produce the video.
We started by getting a rough script of what they wanted to say and building out just the text on a storyboard. Once we had that in place, we started creating basic illustrations for these sections to confirm where we wanted to go with each bit. This helped us to decide the direction and actually resulted in us wanted to continue with a simpler style as the graphics worked very well without being too complex. We also knew we wanted some real life footage in the video to contrast with the illustrations, so we began looking into stock videos quite early on.

From there, I took the illustrations into After Effects and worked to transition between each section in the most effective ways possible. This resulted in me producing several animatics of each section, creating different ways they could be built until we found a path for each of them that we liked. I built the project in compartments so that each one could easily be swapped out if we decided we wanted to go a different direction at certain points, and the project did change over time from the storyboards.
Once the animation was done, I refined it more with some secondary animation and techniques like squash and stretch to finalise it, but the video still felt like it needed more. From the beginning, we had the text on the storyboards and the text remained as part of the design for each section, but I felt that it would be better with audio too. So I recorded a voice over for each of the sections and matched it up to the video, helping the viewer to watch without having to focus too much on the text.
Overall, I’m very happy with how this project turned out, going from the planning phase to completion in a way you love to see projects done.
