This project involved editing a wedding video for my CEO, created as a Valentine’s Day gift. I was given a hard drive containing around 200 video clips, ranging from very short moments to a handful of longer takes, and asked to shape them into a single film, which I used Adobe Premiere Pro to do.
With only a few days to complete the edit, the first step was reviewing all of the footage and selecting the moments that best told the story of the day. I was asked to edit the video to Stephanie Mills – Never Knew Love Like This Before – the bride’s favourite song – so much of the pacing and structure came from syncing the visuals closely to the music.
A key part of the edit was showing the story of the day, starting with balancing the ‘getting ready’ moments for both the bride and groom before they meet, and then letting the day unfold naturally from there. I also worked sections of the speeches into the edit, layering them over the music where they felt most appropriate to support the narrative.
The film ends on the couple’s first dance, where the band were performing the same song I was using. I transitioned from the studio track into the live audio from the footage, syncing the two to move seamlessly from the edit into the real moment on the dance floor. As the original song was much longer than the final video, the audio was carefully cut and restructured to fit the overall runtime.
My CEO and his wife were delighted with the result. We played it in the office and everyone really enjoyed it, with several people commenting on how emotional it felt. That feedback made me particularly pleased with how the final piece came together.
